General Surgery
General surgery, despite its name, is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal organs, e.g., esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid and parathyroid glands. They also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, and hernias.
General surgery may still be performed with larger incisions (open surgery), but many times these procedures can be done utilizing smaller incisions (minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery) depending on the patient’s need, surgical problem and prior surgical history.
